Forestry
In Emanuel County, forestry is more than an industry. It’s our heritage. Nearly 70 percent of our 686 square miles is blanketed by trees, fueling an economy that makes us Georgia’s fourth-largest forestry producer.
Under the guidance of County Chief Ranger Doug Claxton and five other foresters, the Emanuel County unit of the Georgia Forestry Commission (GFC) is vital in preserving our woodlands, supporting responsible land use, and nurturing a deep-rooted forestry tradition. From protecting forest health to educating future generations, our local forestry team ensures Emanuel County remains a thriving base for both our natural resources and a fitting home for our cherished Pine Tree Festival.
With Emanuel County’s forests covering such a vast area, the Georgia Forestry Commission provides a range of essential services to sustain and protect these resources for generations to come. These services include:
Weather Tracking and Burn Permitting
Safe, managed burns are essential for forest health, and the Emanuel County Forestry Unit leads this effort by issuing burn permits to landowners. By carefully assessing weather conditions, humidity, and wind speeds, our foresters ensure burns are conducted safely, reducing wildfire risks and maintaining ecological balance.
Timber Harvesting and Landowner Assistance
Our foresters work closely with local landowners to assist them in marketing their timber, ensuring fair value for their products. This service includes guidance on optimal harvesting practices and sustainable yield, which benefit both the economy and the long-term productivity of Emanuel County’s forests.
Wildfire Prevention and Mutual Aid for Fire Response
With forestry as a cornerstone of our economy, fire prevention and response are critical. The Emanuel County Forestry Unit collaborates with local fire services to provide mutual aid, sharing resources and expertise with Emanuel County Fire & Rescue, local law enforcement, and Emanuel County 911 and Emanuel County EMA in case of wildfires and other emergencies.
Beyond firefighting, our forestry team proactively monitors forest conditions and implements strategies such as creating firebreaks and selectively thinning forests (for the purpose of decreasing fuel loads) to reduce fire risks during high-risk seasons.
Forest Management and Sustainability
Our forestry team supports the health and sustainability of Emanuel County’s forests through comprehensive management services. These include tracking forest health, implementing sustainable practices to preserve ecosystems, and leading reforestation projects that expand and restore forested areas. Customized management plans help landowners balance ecological and economic goals, while pest and invasive species control measures protect forest biodiversity.
Educational and Outreach Programs
GFC’s Emanuel County unit actively engages with the community through events like the Pine Tree Festival, local parades, and Farm Day for elementary students, fostering a love for forestry and promoting awareness of conservation practices.
