Board of Assessors

The board of assessors operates independently from but collaborates with the county's tax assessor's office in a supportive capacity. As a general statement, its purpose is to oversee the office's work, ensuring accurate and fair property assessments.

The board meets monthly to evaluate assessment practices, monitor property sales for comparable values, approve assessed values, review and make determinations about exemptions, and deliver a digest (or a summary of all county property and their values) to the commissioners for budgeting purposes. However, purpose the board of assessors' most important function (at least as it relates to property owners) is being the starting point of the appeals process.

Its 3 members are local citizens who apply for vacancies and are selected by a vote from the county commissioners. They serve three-year terms.
