- I have household garbage to dispose of. How much will it cost me?
-
f your household garbage weighs 1 ton or less, you can dispose of it at the transfer station free of charge. For anything over 1 ton, a tipping fee applies based on weight, with a maximum charge of $57.62 per ton.
- Can I use a dumpsite that isn’t in my area?
-
Dumpsites are available for all Emanuel County residents, so you’re free to use the location that’s most convenient for you.
- My business needs to dispose of waste. What are the costs?
-
All business-related waste is charged a tipping fee at the transfer station. The fee is based on weight and capped at $57.62 per ton, no matter the total volume.
- How is the money from tipping fees used?
-
As a non-revenue department, Emanuel County’s Solid Waste Department exists to serve the community, not to generate profit. Tipping fees are implemented solely to help cover the cost of operations, including maintaining dumpsites and transfer station services. These fees also play a vital role in keeping Emanuel County landfill-free by offsetting the expense of transporting trash to out-of-county landfills, ensuring our waste management system remains efficient and sustainable.
- How many dumpsites does Emanuel County have, and where are they located?
-
We have 20 dumpsites, and we've provided their respective addresses on our Dumpsite Locations page.
- Are there rules for using the dumpsites?
-
Yes. Residents must adhere to operating hours, only dispose of permitted waste, and avoid overloading dumpsters. Cameras monitor all dumpsites, and violators may be ticketed for illegal dumping or misuse.
- How do I prepare trash for disposal?
-
Bag all household garbage securely before bringing it to the dumpsites or transfer station. This helps maintain a clean and efficient waste management process.
- I’ve never used the transfer station before. Will someone help me, and how does it work?
-
Absolutely! A staff member will be on-site to assist you during operating hours. Here’s how it works:
- Arrive prepared. Safely load your trash and bring it to the transfer station.
- Check in. Upon entering the gates, stop and check in with the staff member.
- Weigh your load. Drive across the scale so the staff can determine the weight of your trash.
- Unload. The staff will help unload your trash quickly and efficiently.
- Pay if needed. If your load exceeds the 1-ton free limit or is business-related, you’ll pay your ticket based on the weight.
Once everything is unloaded and taken care of, you’ll be on your way! It’s a simple, straightforward process, and our team is always happy to guide you.
- What materials are not accepted at the transfer station?
-
The transfer station cannot accept concrete, asphalt, batteries, hazardous materials, asbestos, or limb debris.
- What should I do with items not accepted at the transfer station?
-
Visit our Special Waste Disposal page for guidance on handling hazardous materials, electronics, construction debris, and more.
- Why can’t certain items, like batteries and asbestos, be taken to the transfer station?
-
These items are hazardous and require specialized handling to prevent harm to the environment and public health. Refer to our Special Waste Disposal page for appropriate alternatives.
- How do I know if my trash is too large to bring to the transfer station?
-
If you’re unsure, consider the size and type of your waste. Items like furniture, appliances, or construction debris may require special disposal services. Contact the solid waste department for guidance.
- What happens to my trash after it leaves the transfer station?
-
Once collected at the transfer station, trash is separated and sent to a landfill in another county through a third-party contractor. This ensures waste is managed responsibly and sustainably.
- How do I report illegal dumping?
-
You can report illegal dumping directly to the Emanuel County Building Inspection and Code Enforcement Department or the Emanuel County Sheriff's Office. Alternatively, you can file a report online using our Report a Code Violation Form.

-
While the department doesn’t provide direct event services, we can advise on disposal options for large gatherings. For temporary dumpsters or increased waste pickup, contact a private waste hauler.

Solid Waste
Trash may not be glamorous, but it’s an essential part of keeping Emanuel County running smoothly—and no one does it better than our solid waste department. This small but mighty team, led by Wesley Shivers and supported by two skilled employees, oversees the operation of strategically-placed dumpsites and a transfer station. Their work ensures that all household garbage is collected, processed, and transferred out of the county, keeping Emanuel County proudly landfill-free for more than 2 decades.
In 2002, Emanuel County made the forward-thinking decision to do away with its landfill, recognizing the long-term environmental and community benefits of transitioning to a transfer station system. By eliminating the need for a local landfill, the county has reduced its environmental footprint, protected local ecosystems, and ensured a cleaner, healthier future for residents. This approach reflects the county’s commitment to sustainability and responsible waste management.
Today, the solid waste operation continues to uphold this commitment by operating a streamlined waste management system that benefits all residents.
Department Overview
The cornerstone of Emanuel County’s waste management system is the transfer station. As a central hub for processing trash, the transfer station plays a critical role in keeping the county landfill-free. This facility is where all collected waste is weighed, sorted, and prepared for transport to an approved landfill in another county through a third-party contractor. By managing waste in this way, Emanuel County ensures responsible disposal while minimizing its environmental footprint.
To complement this system, the solid waste department operates 20 dumpsites located across the county. These dumpsites provide residents with safe and convenient access to waste disposal. Once trash is dropped off at the dumpsites, it’s collected by the solid waste team and transported to the transfer station for further processing. This synergy between dumpsites and the transfer station creates an efficient, modern waste management system that meets the needs of Emanuel County residents while upholding the county’s commitment to sustainability.
The department also works closely with Keep Emanuel Beautiful to support beautification projects and community sustainability efforts, further reinforcing its dedication to a clean and green Emanuel County.
Updated Policy
In August 2024, the department introduced a revised transfer station policy to better serve residents and businesses. Key updates include enhanced operational hours and streamlined procedures for large-volume disposals. For full details, residents can electronically view the new transfer station policy in its entirety, or you can ask for a copy at the transfer station itself.
