The Green Jacket Tradition
The Green Jacket Tradition was first introduced in 1987, marking the beginning of a cherished custom that celebrates the outstanding contributions of Emanuel County’s finest. One of the most iconic aspects of the Pine Tree Festival, it's a celebration of leadership, community service, and excellence. This coveted honor is inspired by the prestigious Green Jacket awarded at The Masters golf tournament and has become a hallmark of the festival, embodying the spirit and pride of Emanuel County.
The Role of the Green Jacket Recipient
Each year, the Pine Tree Festival Committee selects a deserving individual to don the Green Jacket and serve as the festival’s grand marshal. This honor is reserved for those who have made significant contributions to the community, the festival itself, or the county’s cultural and economic growth. The recipient is announced at the Swainsboro-Emanuel County Chamber Banquet in January, adding an air of anticipation and excitement to the lead-up of the festival.
As grand marshal, the recipient leads the Grand Parade, one of the festival’s most celebrated events. Draped in the vibrant green of the jacket—a nod to the enduring strength and beauty of the county’s pine trees—the honoree becomes the face of the festival, embodying its values of unity, heritage, and community pride.
The Tradition’s Beginnings
The Green Jacket Tradition was introduced as a way to celebrate individuals whose efforts have significantly shaped the Pine Tree Festival and Emanuel County. Its deep green color pays homage to the lush pines that define the region’s landscape and history, while the act of bestowing it symbolizes gratitude and admiration.
Over the years, the Green Jacket has been awarded to a diverse group of recipients, from civic leaders and business pioneers to dedicated volunteers who have gone above and beyond to ensure the festival’s success. Each jacket tells a story of commitment and a legacy of making Emanuel County a better place.

A Legacy That Grows
The Green Jacket is more than just an award; it’s a representation of what makes Emanuel County unique. As the recipient takes their place at the head of the Grand Parade, they carry with them not only the honor of the role but the hopes and pride of an entire community.
The tradition continues to evolve, but its core remains the same: to celebrate those who embody the heart and soul of the Pine Tree Festival and Emanuel County. It’s a tradition that’s as evergreen as the pines themselves and one that inspires future generations to contribute to their community with the same passion and dedication.
