Fleet Maintenance
Behind every vehicle and piece of equipment serving Emanuel County is the fleet maintenance department, the team that quite literally keeps the county rolling. Every patrol car on the road, every fire truck ready to respond, and every administrative vehicle serving the county owes its reliability to the fleet maintenance department.
Duties
Led by Fleet Maintenance Superintendent Henry Wilkerson, this team of dedicated professionals keeps Emanuel County’s vehicles and equipment in top condition. With a fleet of 170 vehicles under their care, they handle everything from routine maintenance checks and safety inspections to major repairs and part replacements, ensuring every asset is ready to meet the county's needs.
The department also oversees vehicle lifecycle strategies that prioritize cost-efficiency and long-term value. By maintaining detailed records of maintenance schedules, repair histories, and vehicle conditions, The hands of fleet maintenance help extend the lifespan of county assets and reduce costly downtime. Retrofitting vehicles with new technologies and equipment ensures they meet evolving operational and environmental demands, further strengthening the department’s contribution to county operations.
Emergency Preparedness
When storms approach, the fleet maintenance department is a critical part of the county’s response team. Year-round preventative maintenance reduces the amount of last-minute work needed to prepare vehicles for severe weather, but when a storm is imminent, the department shifts into high gear. From motor graders and backhoes to emergency response vehicles, they ensure that every piece of equipment is ready to help restore passable roads and keep services running.
Once the storm passes, the team provides fast service to keep vehicles operational as recovery efforts continue, supporting the road department and other teams working to protect and rebuild the community.
Partnerships
Emanuel County Fleet Maintenance is committed to supporting local businesses whenever possible. The county sources fuel locally, ensuring a reliable supply while investing in the community. Parts for repairs are also ordered locally whenever available and fiscally responsible, highlighting the county's efforts to balance quality, cost, and community support.
